2017 Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Volunteers

June 28, 2017

Our volunteers did some great work yesterday! “They were the most prepared volunteers I’ve ever seen,” said volunteer coordinator Leslie. And, boy!, were they ready to work.

The 10 volunteers arrived with completed paperwork in hand, and, after their tour of the Oakland campus, got to work right away. Most of the day’s projects included little to no assembly instructions. This group was up for the challenge! They worked quickly & efficiently, finishing construction of a seesaw, sandbox, and a segment of a fence with time to spare. But the crew wanted to fill the rest of their time! They decided to continue their service by weeding, pruning, and helping us sort the donations storage room.

Thanks so much for your hard work, Lockton volunteers!

Courtesy of xMatters Inc., Fred Finch Youth Center participants made their way over to the A’s Coliseum last Friday evening to enjoy a stadium BBQ and ballgame. Seeing as the Oakland Athletics won 5-0 against the Cleveland Indians, it’s needless to say that our A’s fans had a grand ol’ time. Here are a few photos of FFYC participants and staff enjoying the game.

August 1, 2017

On the evening of August 1st, neighborhoods around the country hosted National Night Out events. FFYC’s apartment complex and program Rising Oaks joined in, and hosted a community dinner.

According to the City of Oakland’s website, “Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, NNO [National Night Out] is America’s night out and a time for neighbors to get together to have a block party, ice cream social, potluck, or other outdoor event to build neighborhood spirit and unity, which is the first defense against crime. Research shows that when neighbors know each other, neighborhoods are safer.”

Gilead Sciences’ #WeekOfService

August 3, 2017

In celebration of its 30th Anniversary, Gilead Sciences held a week of community service. One hundred Gilead employees visited Fred Finch Youth Center’s Coolidge Campus on Thursday, August 3rd, to complete much needed maintenance tasks. Some quotes from a conversation with our FFYC Maintenance staff say it all:

“You know what– out of all of the volunteers that have come through here– they were one of the hardest working crews we’ve had,” said Earl.

Ron added in, “We’ve had some crews around here all day, but they haven’t completed as much as these guys did in two hours!”

Earl continued, “They were hard-working but friendly at the same time…”

“–with a smile!,” both Ron and Earl chimed in together.

“They were such good workers they really had me tired!,” Earl said, “I look forward to having them come back again.”

Here are some photos of the crew at work:

Volunteers on the back fence of campus worked to remove overgrown foliage that had covered our fencing.
The "Rock Crew" problem solved & figured out an alternate solution to their task!

The window washing crew really had their work cut out for them, but they did it without complaints!
Volunteers cheerfully chatted with one another while completing their tasks, such as these group as they weeded flower beds.
The full group stood in front of the Training Center to pose for a group photo
This group of volunteers found extra work for themselves to do after the main crew was done for the day!
After a busy few hours, it was time to enjoy lunch.

“Growing up, I struggled with having to be resilient while seeing so much violence around my community. As a Family Partner at Fred Finch, I love working with people and helping them access community resources. I share my own life experiences to help families feel safe and able to relate to me as a professional, and I utilize the principles I facilitate with families in my personal life. I do not do this job for the pay–I do it for the experience of working with different families and professionals. At Fred Finch, it’s never a dull moment!”

Support Housing for Young Adults

Photo collage of FFYC housing programs

FFYC provides housing for young adults who have experienced homelessness, are diagnosed with mental health challenges, and/or are in extended foster care or have aged out of the foster system. When residents move into FFYC housing, we provide most basic necessities that they’ll need for day-to-day life in their living space. As they transition out of our housing, we typically encourage them to keep the majority of these items. This way, they’ll have the basic household necessities for their next step in life. Needless to say, with over 60 housing units we cycle through a lot of supplies! Here’s where you come in– your donations help keep us going.

Our housing programs are always in need of new household supplies for our young adult participants! Your donations of new items are welcome and needed. Gift certificates to stores that commonly sell household goods are also especially appreciated.

2017 Residential Carnival

August 23, 2017

On a sunny day on the Coolidge Avenue campus, youth from our residential treatment programs in Oakland welcomed their loved ones for a day of fun in the sun. The Avalon and New Yosemite staff come together with volunteers from different departments at FFYC to host a carnival for the participants each year, complete with games, prizes, snacks, and a water slide! Short term residential treatment program New Yosemite works with adolescents with developmental disabilities and/or autism who are in crisis to help them and their caregivers establish stability. Our longer term program, Avalon, includes a residential component and a non-public school, which work with youth who have diagnoses of both developmental or cognitive disability, and mental illness. Both programs provide intensive, 24-hour care to their participants.

Avalon housing could really use some new flooring. Ideally, we would like to install high quality laminate that would be easy to clean, and less prone to scratching when moving furniture.

Our temporary housing program for homeless young adults in Berkeley, Turning Point, would love some help with its outdoor spaces!

The program has two primary spaces that could use some groundskeeping love.

  1. The edible garden: The garden boxes could use some sprucing up, as well as the general surrounding area.Edible garden
  2. The side yard: This area could become a lovely place for residents to hang out and relax. Help improve its feng shui with some fresh landscaping!
